Architect Bill Ingram discusses his design for a leafy green lake house bathroom. The architect discusses how he created a leafy green bathroom with stunning views in Lake Martin, Alabama.
Christine Pittel: Wow! Where did you get that green?
Bill Ingram: This is a lake house, weekend, and green leaves simply says "cabin in the woods" for me. Suddenly, you feel as if you are outside the among the trees.
Is it an old house?
Not brand new. But I wanted the bathroom to feel as if it was once a porch that is now closed. It's funny how an old house, we work hard to make additions that blend in. With a new home, we try to make people believe that if it has been added over the years.
What gives this vintage feel?
For starters, the wood on the walls and the ceiling is deliberately non-precious - just edge color, tongue and groove. And the ceiling is made of planks of random cards that do not even match the walls. There is nothing in this suburb bathroom.
Not integrated into the double vanity.
Right. The two basins are treated as furniture and antique oak built with honed limestone gray-green on top that has a matt, weathered quality as if you had brought from outside.
Why not build with dark wood floors like?
As they go well together, I just thought it was much better and more sophisticated if they were not a match dead. Too dark wood can get oppressive.
What made you choose a glass shower? It's so modern, in a very old piece.
I like the glass. It just made everything go. Usually, the tub is in the main part of the bathroom, but I think the shower is the most used. We put the tub and toilet behind French doors with curtains of old-fashioned café for a little privacy. Generally, you have a couple sharing space. There are his-and-hers closets on each side of the shower. Whoever takes the sink gets left the closet to the left. Everyone has their area. You can be in the same room, but you do not encroach on each other.
Where are medicine cabinets?
Behind the mirrors. We make ourselves, so that we can get a size that we want. And it does not look like a medicine cabinet because it is so off the scale. Make sure that the frame projected on the wall just enough so that you can open with one hand.
Lighting help create an atmosphere. Tell me why this lantern attracted you.
It is simple and spare parts - like a glass jar with an inverted light bulb in it. And is suspended from a rope noose, so this is the great combination of modern and rustic. Sconces, too, felt as if they were on the edge of modern, but the shades back in time. And they cast a beautiful light alone. You do not want to lose all the shadows.
